Jackie Cooper

Born: September 15, 1922

He was on screen by the age of 7.  As a member of the "Our Gang" he was known as Jackie...and as he grew up he appeared in many films during the 1930's and 1940's.

Television was quickly right behind, in 1959 he headed up the cast of the sitcom "Hennesey" in which he played a Navy doctor.  The show went off the air in 1962.  As a character actor he appeared on such programs as "Your Show of Shows", "The Buick-Berle Show", "The Colgate Comedy Hour", "What's My Line?", "I've Got a Secret", "The Tennessee Ernie Ford Show", "The Dinah Shore Chevy Show", "The Dick Powell Theatre", "The Danny Kaye Show", "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson", "Suspense", "Lux Video Theatre", "The United States Steel Hour", "The Twilight Zone", "Hawaii Five-O", "McCloud", "Ironside", "The F.B.I.", "Columbo", "Kojak", "Mobile One", "Police Story", "The Rockford Files", "St. Elsewhere" and "Murder, She Wrote."

In 1978 he appeared as Daily Planet Editor-in-Chief Perry White in the Superman motion picture.  He was one of many mega stars to appear in the film, the list includes Marlon Brando, Christopher Reeve, Ned Beatty, Terence Stamp, Gene Hackman, Margot Kidder, Glenn Ford, Phyllis Thaxter, Susannah York and Valerie Perrine.  Actor Keenan Wynn was the original choice to play the gruff but lovable editor but he had to bow out due to heart trouble.  The actor reprised the role of Perry White in Superman II (1980), Superman III (1983) and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987).  His final acting role was in two episodes of "Capital News" in 1990...

He passed away on May 3, 2011 at the age of 88.

A wonderful actor...a fine gentleman...we've lost another of Hollywood's finest, one of the last connections to the Golden Era.
