Jack Klugman: The Other Odd One Gone (680)

Born: April 27, 1922 A terrible loss, especially on Christmas Eve!  A great man who was no stranger to the stage and screen...his large Broadway credit list includes Gypsy, 12 Angry Men, The Value of Names, The Sunshine Boys and The Odd Couple. The first of his two greatest television roles was as Oscar Madison on "The Odd Couple" opposite Tony Randall (1920-2004) from 1970 to 1975.  The two would reunite several times following the end of the series for stage projects, television commercials and even a 1993 TV movie entitled "The Odd Couple: Together Again."  His second television hit was as medical examiner Dr. Quincy on "Quincy M.E." from 1976 to 1983.  The show was certainly a pioneer for all medical crime shows that followed including "CSI" and "Body of Proof."   As a guest actor he appeared on such shows as "The United States Steel Hour", "Alfred Hitchcock Presents", "Gunsmoke", "Pla

Born:  April 2, 1920 This man is on my top ten list of the finest television actors of all time.  Early in his career he did appear in a few films include the famous Sunset Blvd and Dark City.  In June 1949 he began playing the role of Sergeant Joe Friday on the radio police drama, "Dragnet."  Two years later, "Dragnet" made the transition to television courtesy of an episode of the "Chesterfield Sound-Off Time."  The show broadcast on December 16, 1951 and featured Joe Friday with his partner Sergeant Ben Romero (Barton Yarborough).  The episode was actually adapted from a radio script that was used in 1949 and introduced television audiences to Friday's trademark deadpan behavior.   The radio series ran from 1949-1957 while the television series was on the air from 1951 to 1959.  Both produced over 200 episodes.  It was not uncommon in those days for a program to be on both radio and television with the same principal players, as many people

Today would have been the 90th birthday of this wonderful actress.  Her talents were first exposed to the world on the Broadway stage when she originated the role of Maggie in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof."  On film she can be seen in I Remember Mama, Panic in the Streets, Fourteen Hours and Vertigo just to name a few. As television quickly became a major place to find work she began playing guest parts on many different shows of the day.  Her resume includes "Robert Montgomery Presents", "Playhouse 90", "The United States Steel Hour", "Death Valley Days", "Dr. Kildare" and "Daniel Boone."  I know I have mentioned this in a previous tribute but it is worth repeating.  Her appearance on "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" is one of the show's most popular episodes.  Entitled "Lamb to the Slaughter" it originally aired on April 13, 1958.  The story involves a scorned housewife getting even with her husb

Born: May 30, 1899 Sadly my research turned up very little about this talented character actress.  She had a supporting role as Katy the Maid on the radio sitcom "My Favorite Husband" starring Lucille Ball with Richard Denning during its entire 1948-1951 run.  She later reunited with Ball in three episodes of "I Love Lucy" on television in 1952 and 1953.  Her other television credits include "Boston Blackie", "Dragnet", "Fireside Theatre", "Mr. & Mrs. North", "Dear Phoebe", "The Great Gildersleeve", "The Loretta Young Show", "The Real McCoys", "The Millionaire", "The Gale Storm Show: Oh, Susanna!", "Peter Gunn", "Make Room for Daddy", "The Bill Dana Show" and "The Patty Duke Show."  Her final television performance was in an episode of "That Girl" in 1966.  She appeared in a few films in the 1950's and 19

Born: July 29, 1924 This gentleman is a personal favorite...his body of work is incredible.   By the time he watched the curtain go down for the last time he had enjoyed a career that lasted more than fifty years.  The list below is nowhere near complete and only represents a small portion of this man's amazing resume.  Because of his powerful voice he began in radio when he was just eleven years old.  He made his start on television in 1951 on "Lux Video Theatre" and would go on to appear in hundreds of television episodes over the next five decades.....During the 1960-1961 television season he had a regular run on the program "Hong Kong." "The Further Adventures of Ellery Queen" "The Twilight Zone" - "To Serve Man" 1962, he later spoofed this performance in 1991's Naked Gun 2 1/2 "Dr. Kildare" "The Dick Powell Theatre" "The United States Steel Hour" "The Richard Boone Show" &

April 13, 1923 - September 25, 2005 Who could forget Agent 86's most memorable lines?? - "Would ya believe...?", "Miss it by that much..."  The great man is a personal favorite of mine, that unique voice can be heard now almost half a century later as Tennessee Tuxedo on his own show and also on another animated program "Underdog."  In the 1950's he appeared on Steve Allen's "Tonight Show" along side other funnymen such as Tom Poston and Don Knotts.  This work led to a recurring role as hotel house detective Byron Glick on "The Bill Dana Show."  By 1965 he was playing Maxwell Smart, Agent 86 of Control.  His sidekick (later wife) was Agent 99 (Barbara Feldon) and his boss was The Chief (Edward Platt).  The show ran for 5 seasons producing over 150 episodes.  The star received an Emmy award for his performance as the bumbling but dedicated crime fighter.  During the 1970's he attempted returns to television

Her career began in the late 1950's and it didn't stop until she drew her last breathe only six days ago.  As herself she appeared on many television shows including "You Bet Your Life", "The Jack Paar Tonight Show", "The Jack Paar Program", "The Match Game", "The Art Linkletter Show", "What's My Line?", "Jackie Gleason and his American Scene Magazine", "Bob Hope Presents the Chrysler Theatre", "I've Got a Secret", "The Milton Berle Show", "The Carol Burnett Show", "The Joey Bishop Show", "The Hollywood Palace", "The Ed Sullivan Show", The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson", "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno", "The Hollywood Square

He was on the stage in 1940's and also appeared in some feature films including 1962's To Kill a Mockingbird.  Mostly though audiences will remember him for his MANY MANY appearances on television between 1949 and the early 2000's.  The list includes (but is not limited to): "The Philco-Goodyear Television Playhouse" "Robert Montgomery Presents" "Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse" "Ben Casey" "The Donna Reed Show" "The Lucy Show" "The Twilight Zone" "77 Sunset Strip" "The Fugitive" "Bob Hope Presents the Chrysler Theatre" "Star Trek" "Bonanza" "All in the Family" "Cannon" "Marcus Welby, M.D." "The Waltons" "Columbo" "Ironside" &quo
