Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! I give a great big warm welcome to 2010!!! This year is going to be filled with a lot of changes I know it…some good and some bad. The first post for In Memoriam in 2010 will be a remembrance of one of animations most beloved female voices... Born September 13, 1908 she began in 1930 in Bubbles which was a Vitaphone Varieties Short. She provided the voice of Betty Boop for the first time in 1930 as well. She would go onto to voice the character in 111 projects. In 1933 she began voicing Popeye’s girlfriend Olive Oyl in the short I Eats My Spinach. She would voice the character in 151 more shorts by 1957. From 1960 to 1961 she voiced Olive Oyl in 143 episodes of “Popeye the Sailor.” She also lent her voice to other characters including Swee’ Pea, Little Bo Peep, Pudgy and Little Lulu… Her television credits include “The Bob Newhart Show” (1960’s version), “77 Sunset Strip”, “Naked City” and “The Corner Bar.” She also appeared in films such as A Majority of One, It’$ Only Money, Funny Girl, Move and Hot Resort. The actress returned to voice Betty Boop for the final time in a 1988 cameo in the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit… In 1989 she made her final appearance on screen in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. The story saw her as the senile Aunt Bethany, who brings her cat to Christmas dinner wrapped in a box, laces her Jell-O with cat food, says the pledge of allegiance instead of grace at the table and is inspired to sing the Star Spangled Banner at the sight of Santa’s sleigh…her passing came on January 4, 1998. She will always be a part of history…some generations know her as Betty and Olive and other generations know her as Aunt Bethany…that’s cool…at least they know her…and they’ll never forget her!
