She appeared in 86 films including Brother Rat (1938), Brother Rat and a Baby (1940), My Favorite Spy (1942), The Lost Weekend (1945), The Yearling (1946), Johnny Belinda (1948), Stage Fright (1950), The Glass Menagerie (1950), The Blue Veil (1951), Magnificent Obsession (1954), Lucy Gallant (1955), Pollyanna (1960), Bon Voyage (1962) and How to Commit Marriage (1969).
As television became a popular medium she began to make more appearances on the biggest shows of the day. Her guest work credits include "G.E. True Theater", "Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse", "Wagon Train", "Bob Hope Presents the Chrysler Theatre", "The Red Skelton Hour", "My Three Sons", "The Bold Ones: The New Doctors", "Owen Marshall, Counselor at Law", "The Love Boat", "Charlie's Angels" and "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman."
From 1955 to 1958 she hosted "The Fireside Theatre" and from 1981 to 1990 she starred as Angela Channing on the CBS prime time soap opera "Falcon Crest."
