His career for more than five decades...bringing him from stage to television to the big screen.  He appeared on some of television's earliest programs including "Suspense", "Goodyear Playhouse", "The Phil Silvers Show", "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour" and "The United States Steel Hour." 

In 1971 he filled in for an ailing Milburn Stone on the western "Gunsmoke."  Stone, who played Doc Adams, missed six episodes due to heart problems and the actor filled in for him playing Dr. John Chapman.  Various other projects between the 1960's and the 2000's include "M*A*S*H", "Barnaby Jones", "Vega$", "St. Elsewhere", "Magnum, P.I.", "Murder, She Wrote", "Cheers" and "Wings."  In 2002 he co-starred with Sally Field and Diahann Carroll in the Supreme Court based drama "The Court." 

His film credits include Larger than Life, Bastard Out of Carolina, A Thousand Acres, Shaft and Morning.  In 1989 he became known to a brand new legion fans when he played Police Comissioner Gordon in the Batman motion picture.  He followed up by playing the role again in 1992's Batman Returns, 1995's Batman Forever and 1997's Batman & Robin.
