-Fred G. Sanford, a cantankerous and stubborn 65-year-old junk dealer with a heart of gold
LaWanda Page (1920-2002)
-Aunt Esther Anderson, the sister of Fred's late wife Elizabeth and the target of his insults
Whitman Mayo (1930-2002)
-Grady Wilson, Fred's best friend
Don Bexley (1910-1997)
-Bubba Bexley, Fred's good friend and constant fellow schemer
Noriyuki "Pat" Morita (1932-2005)
-Ah Chew, a neighbor and friend to Lamont. Fred often insulted him.
Noam Pitlik (1932-1999)
-Officer "Swanny" Swanhauser, a Caucasian neighborhood cop who appeared during season 1 and 2. He was replaced by Howard Platt who played Officer Hopkins.
Nancy Kulp (1921-1991)
-Mrs. May Hopkins, mother to Officer Hopkins and a tenant in Fred's boarding house
Slappy White (1921-1995)
-Melvin, Fred's friend who appeared during seasons 1 and 2
Arnold Johnson (1921-2000)
-George F. "Hutch" Hutton, a tenant of Fred's who was released from jail after 30 years
Beah Richards (1920-2000)
-Aunt Ethel, another sister of Fred's deceased wife, she appeared in season 2 only
DeForest Covan (1917-2007)
-Uncle Woodrow "Woody" Anderson, Aunt Esther's long suffering husband. Covan only appeared as Woody in one episode in 1973.

Raymond Allen (1929- )
-Uncle Woodrow "Woody" Anderson, replaced DeForest Covan as Woody and played him on a recurring basis from 1974 to 1977
Nathaniel Taylor (1938- )
-Rollo Lawson, Lamont's best friend, much to Fred's chagrin
Lynn Hamilton (1930- )
-Nurse Donna Harris, Fred's fiancee during the entire series run
Gregory Sierra (1941- )
Julio Fuentas, Lamont's Puerto Rican friend and the Sanford's neighbor (Seasons 1-4)
Hal Williams (1938- )
-Officer T. "Smitty" Smith, an African American neighborhood cop, Fred called him "Brother Smith"
Howard Platt (1938- )
-Officer Howard "Hoppy" Hopkins, a Caucasian neighborhood cop, Smitty's partner, his mother rented a room at the Sanford Arms. He replaced Officer "Swanny" in season 2 and remained until the series ended.
