Leslie Nielsen

Born: February 11, 1926 This is a memoriam I never thought I would have to write. Believe me it comes with an incredibly heavy heart. The gentleman that will be honored in this post is a legend in the world of comedy. I kid you not when I say that there isn't a day that goes by where he doesn't dip into the cobwebs of my brain... He made his first television appearance in 1950. During that decade he appeared on such shows as "The Philco-Goodyear Television Playhouse", "Suspense", "Goodyear Playhouse", "The Untouchables" and "Alfred Hitchcock Presents." From 1961 to 1962 he co-starred on the series "The New Breed." In 1965 he had regular roles on "Peyton Place" and "Dr. Kildare." His other appearances on 1960's television include "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour", "The Fugitive", "Wagon Train", "The Defenders", "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea", "Bob Hope Presents the Chrysler Theatre", "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.", "The F.B.I." and "The Bold Ones: The Protectors." The 1970's saw him on "The Red Skelton Hour", "M*A*S*H", "The Bold Ones: The New Doctors", "Fantasy Island" and "The Love Boat" just to name a few... In the 1980's he appeared on "Hotel", "227", "Murder, She Wrote", "Highway to Heaven", "Father Dowling Mysteries", "Who's the Boss" and in 1992 he was the special guest star in the final episode of "The Golden Girls." One of his early films was How to Commit Marriage opposite Bob Hope, Jackie Gleason, Jane Wyman and Tina Louise. 1980 however was the year that allowed him to bring out his comedy genius. The spoof Airplane sent him into high demand. In 1982 he first played Lieutenant Frank Drebin in the short lived series "Police Squad!" The show was canceled after six episodes but in 1988 he returned as Lieutenant Drebin on the big screen in The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad. The film was followed up by 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear in 1991 and 33 1/3:The Final Insult in 1994. It was his work as Lieutenant Drebin that earned him a special place in my heart. Between 1996 and 1998 he appeared in the spoofs Spy Hard, Dracula: Dead and Loving It, Mr. Magoo and Wrongfully Accused. In the most recent years he was present as the Commander and Chief of the United States in the spoofs Scary Movie 3 and Scary Movie 4... The active actor was working right up the time of his illness and passing. He made me laugh for the first time when I was 9, 19 and he will continue to do so until I'm 99... At Rest: November 28, 2010 In Memoriam Remembers: Leslie Nielsen
