Elizabeth Montgomery (April 15, 1933 - May 18, 1995)
"Bewitched and Bedazzled"
That is the only way to describe the feeling I get when I see Elizabeth Montgomery's pretty smile.
She played Samantha Stephens on the ABC sitcom "Bewitched" from 1964 until 1972 but her career went a little beyond that. Even though she is the hottest witch in television history she managed to leave that mantle behind in a slew of serious roles in the 1970's and 1980's. With a supporting cast that included Dick York, Dick Sargent, David White, Agnes Moorehead, Marion Lorne, Alice Pearce, Sandra Gould and George Tobias "Bewitched" was one of the 1960's favorite sitcoms and has lived on ever since in syndication and on DVD.
Montgomery made a few appearances on her father's own program "Robert Montgomery Presents" but her other television credits include "Armstrong Circle Theatre", "Climax!", "Kraft Television Theatre", "Studio One", "Suspicion", "Playhouse 90", "The DuPont Show of the Week", "Alfred Hitchcock Presents", "Letter to Loretta", "Wagon Train", "The Tab Hunter Show", "The Untouchables", "The Twilight Zone", "Rawhide", "77 Sunset Strip", "Burke's Law" and "The Flintstones." As herself she appeared on "Password", "The Hollywood Squares", "Password Plus" and "Entertainment Tonight."
She appeared in a few films in the 1950's and 1960's. In 1974 she appeared in a very serious role in the TV movie "A Case of Rape" which dealt with the horrors of rape and its aftermath. A year later Montgomery showed her more zany side when she played the title role in the TV movie "The Legend of Lizzie Borden."
As the 1980's closed and the 1990's Montgomery continued with TV movies. In 1993 she played the title role in "Black Widow Murders: The Blanche Taylor Moore Story." The following year she played Miami reporter/crime solver Edna Buchanan in "The Corpse Had a Familiar Face." In 1995 Montgomery was diagnosed with advanced colorectal cancer but insisted on working. She lent her voice to an episode of "Batman: The Animated Series" and also appeared again as Edna Buchanan in "Deadline for Murder: From the Files of Edna Buchanan." The movie aired on May 8, 1995 and sadly Montgomery passed away ten days later. The episode of "Batman" didn't air until September 12, 1995 and proved to be Montgomery's final TV role. At 62, Montgomery was gone, taken from us much to early.
Elizabeth Montgomery was one of Hollywood's truest beauties...as Samantha she entranced us and as Edna Buchanan she kept us on the edge of our seats...either way every time she twiched her nose or winked her eye, she cast a spell over my heart.
